Rasib Raja, MD, FACP, a nephrologist at Albert Einstein Medical Center, has been  honored by the Delaware Valley Chapter of the National Kidney Foundation for his research to improve the quality of life for dialysis and transplant patients. Dr. Raja has a long-standing affiliation with Albert Einstein Medical Center, where he completed a residency in Internal Medicine and a fellowship in Nephrology.  With his strong commitment to academic medicine, following his training in 1971, Dr. Raja joined Einstein’s Division of Nephrology as an attending nephrologist and served as Chief of Nephrology from 1982 to 2000.

“On behalf of the National Kidney Foundation’s Delaware Valley Chapter, I am delighted to honor Dr. Raja for his many years of dedication helping people with kidney disease and for his significant contributions to the nephrology community,” said Joanne Spink, Executive Director.

Based on Dr. Raja’s research in hemoperfusion (removing toxins from the blood), the country’s first ABO (blood types) incompatible renal transplantation (across blood type barriers) with antibody hemoperfusion took place at Einstein.   His research includes cross-match positive renal transplants (kidney transplants performed despite the presence of antibodies).  In addition, Dr. Raja has played a pivotal role in studies to help improve the treatment of anemia and bone disease in patients with chronic kidney disease and those undergoing hemodialysis.  His list of achievements also includes starting kidney-pancreas transplantation at Einstein.

“A true educator, Dr. Raja helped develop the Nephrology Fellowship Program at Einstein and personally trained more than 100 fellows, many of whom work in the Philadelphia area as well as in cities across the country and around the world,” said Eric Bloom, MD, Chair of Einstein’s Division of Nephrology, who has worked closely with Dr. Raja for more than 20 years. “Dr. Raja also taught and mentored many of our hemodialysis and home dialysis nurses, and his influence contributed to their successful careers in clinical nephrology and clinical research.”

He has published over 115 papers in peer-reviewed journals and has given more than 200 presentations at national and international society conferences.  Dr. Raja is Professor of Medicine at Jefferson Medical College.
