Here is a list of some highlights from the history of Albert Einstein Healthcare Network – the medical center, Einstein at Elkins Park, Germantown Community Health Services, Einstein Center One, Belmont Behavioral Health, MossRehab:

  • 1865 - Jewish Hospital Association incorporated
  • 1866 - Jewish Hospital opened at 56th Street and Haverford Road - 22-bed facility dedicated as "The Jewish Hospital for the Aged, Infirm and Destitute" offering free care  to the suffering poor of all religions
  • 1871 - Jewish Hospital moves to York and Tabor Roads.
  • 1884 - Jewish Hospital purchases first horse-drawn ambulance.
  • 1889 - Jewish Hospital opens "Home for the Aged"
  • 1892 - Nurses' Training School opens
  • 1896 - Jewish Hospital starts gynecologic clinic
  • 1899 - MossRehab founded as Lucien Moss Home for Incurables - part of Jewish Hospital from its opening until it became independent in 1952  
  • 1901 - Frank Synagogue dedicated in memory of long-time board member Henry S. Frank - synagogue stands on campus to this day
  • 1905 - Mt. Sinai Hospital, soon to be a part of the Jewish Hospital, dedicated at Fifth and Wilder Streets in Philadelphia
  • 1912 - Corinthian columns from the demolished United States Mint placed at front entrance of the Jewish Hospital
  • 1925 - Northern Liberties Hospital, soon to be a part of the Jewish Hospital, admits first patients
  • 1937 - Jewish Women's Welfare League opens psychiatric facility - 13-bed Horace Berk Memorial Hospital
  • 1939 - Jewish Women's Welfare League renamed Philadelphia Psychiatric Center,  now Belmont Center for Comprehensive Treatment
  • 1941 - First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt guest of honor at annual Northern Liberties Ball
  • 1941 - Philadelphia Psychiatric Center expands to 60-bed facility
  • 1950 - Hospital planning expert Henry B. Makover, MD recommends the Jewish Hospital, Mount Sinai Hospital and Northern Liberties Hospital merge
  • 1952 - Three hospitals merged under the new name Albert Einstein Medical Center, with the approval of the great scientist - "devoted to medical teaching, medical research and community health activity"  
  • 1959 - Levy  and Paley Clinic buildings still dedicated  
  • 1959 - Lucien Moss Home for Incurables becomes Moss Rehabilitation Hospital
  • 1960 - Cardiologist Harry Goldberg, MD introduces cardiac catheterization techniques
  • 1960 - Korman Research Pavilion opens
  • 1963 - Department of Transplant Immunology and Organ Preservation established
  • 1965 - Physician J. Gershon-Cohen, MD publishes research on mammography and convinces other physicians of its effectiveness as a diagnostic tool
  • 1965 - Einstein Medical Center's first Kidney transplant performed.
  • 1970 - Einstein Medical Center's first Coronary artery bypass surgery performed.
  • 1971 - Harold Isard, MD pioneers low-dose mammography
  • 1981 - Einstein acquires Willowcrest-Bamberger - skilled nursing facility serves as a bridge between hospital and home
  • 1981 - Einstein Medical Center's first Balloon angioplasty performed
  • 1981 - Philadelphia Psychiatric Center becomes subsidiary
  • 1982 - Comprehensive Breast Cancer Center established
  • 1984 - Albert Einstein Healthcare Foundation established
  • 1984 - State-of-the-art, 259-bed Tower Building opens.
  • 1984 - Frank Synagogue renovated and rededicated in honor of Julius and Eleanor Klein - longtime generous supporters of Einstein
  • 1985 - Philadelphia Psychiatric Center creates nation's first compulsive gambling program
  • 1985 - Einstein opens region's first intra-operative radiation suite -- doctors deliver potent dose of radiation directly to a patient's tumor during surgery without harming surrounding tissue
  • 1986 - Philadelphia Psychiatric Center creates program to address the special needs of deaf persons
  • 1987 - As part of a national study Breast Cancer Center helps establish lumpectomy as standard treatment
  • 1988 - State-of-the-art Heart Center established -- heart surgeons use high-powered microscope to perform advanced method of bypass surgery
  • 1988 - Einstein Center One opens in Northeast Philadelphia - offering a variety of services including cancer treatments, neurology, ophthalmology, and cardiology
  • 1989 - Einstein and affiliate Philadelphia Geriatric Center open Prime Health - medical practice specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of illness in older adults
  • 1989 - Using computer imaging known as SPECT, researchers develop first accurate, cost-effective way to diagnose early stages of Alzheimer's
  • 1990 - Philadelphia Psychiatric Center opens comprehensive adolescent treatment center for teens with emotional and/or substance abuse problems
  • 1990 - Einstein's Breast Cancer Center - one of only three area facilities to receive American College of Radiology accreditation, featured on NBC News
  • 1991 - Einstein forms comprehensive Cancer Center
  • 1991 - Einstein opens Ann Newman Maternity Center
  • 1991- Philadelphia Psychiatric Center changes its name to Belmont Center for Comprehensive Treatment
  • 1992 - MossRehab Hospital, one of the nation's foremost rehabilitation facilities joins Einstein
  • 1992 - Belmont Center for Comprehensive Treatment, Moss Rehab Hospital, Willowcrest-Bamberger and Albert Einstein Medical Center form Albert Einstein Healthcare Network
  • 1992 - Einstein one of the first in the region to offer off-pump (also called beating heart bypass) - a procedure that reduces risk of stroke and speeds recovery
  • 1992 - Moss Rehabilitation Research Institute established - one of a few rehabilitation hospitals in the country to operate its own research facility
  • 1993 - Women's Heart Program opens - first program in Philadelphia dedicated to the prevention, detection and treatment of heart disease in women
  • 1995 - All Einstein-related psychiatric services united under the same managerial umbrella - Belmont Behavioral Health (BBH)
  • 1997 - Germantown Hospital becomes part of Albert Einstein Healthcare Network - renamed Germantown Community Health Services.
  • 1997 - Marion-Louise Saltzman Women's Center opens - offering a wide range of healthcare services for women of all ages.
  • 1999 - Gutman Diabetes Institute established - focusing on the complete care of diabetics and their families
  • 2002 - Nat'l Coordinating Office of the Victor Centers for Jewish Genetic Disease opens
  • 2003 - Albert Einstein Healthcare Network acquires Elkins Park Hospital from Tenet Healthcare
  • 2003 - Emergency Department, Philadelphia's largest, completes $10 million renovations and expansion
  • 2003 - Regions first "for-women only" inpatient unit opens
  • 2004 - Einstein named one of the top integrated healthcare networks in the county
  • 2006 - Board of Trustees of Einstein and the boards of Montgomery Health Systems announce agreement to develop a new, technologically advanced medical center
  • 2007 - Einstein sells the Germantown Hospital to La Salle University
  • 2008 - Albert Einstein Healthcare Network separates from Jefferson Health System
  • 2009 - A $10 million renovation and expansion of maternity unit completed
